Description:
On offer from our personal collection is this dynamic old Nganga divination mask from the Yombe/Bakongo peoples of the DR Congo. The diviners are believed to have special powers, enabling them to determine the causes of various events & circumstances within the tribal community - including illness, natural disasters, etc. Such masks are thought to represent the diviners who wear them.
With its piercing, penetrating gaze, the mask's intense & imposing presence is immediately felt... Carved teeth lend a fierce attitude to the spirit of the piece. Pigment has been applied to the surface of the mask, & a protruding top knot adorns the upper brow.
Abrasions, wear, & a few old chips are a testament to this potent mask's age & use. Powerful display.
