Description:
From our personal collection, on offer is a haunting mask from the We-Gere peoples of the Ivory Coast. Such masks are worn & danced during funereal rituals, & are also used to help ferret out guilty individuals in the community.
Adding to the mysteriousness of the piece, the mask has been richly embellished with numerous substances that are believed to enhance it with special powers: animal horns & hair, feathers, cowrie shells, bells, & "magic" pouches. Rolled fabric surrounds the face, & a raffia beard lines the chin.
Despite some old chips, scrapes, & small cracks, this fearsome mask is in good overall condition, & makes a most powerful display. Superb old patina.
