Description:
From our personal collection, on offer is this elegant figural bowl/receptacle from the Senufo peoples of the Ivory Coast. Known for their artistry as woodcarvers, this piece is a fine example of the sculpting skills of the Senufo.
Finely carved details characterize this sensitive piece. Beautifully sculpted, a long, thin nose compliments the elongated face. Incised scarifications highlight the cheeks & brow, & either side of the protruding lips, as well as the prominent breasts. Crowning the head is a wonderfully elaborate coiffure. A combination of raised & incised geometric motifs decorate the outer sidewalls of the bowl & the body's slender form that functions as a graceful stem.
Despite some imperfections in the wood, including a few minor nicks & scrapes, plus evidence of old insect damage (arrested), this delicate, unusual piece is in very good overall condition. Beautiful patina & display.
