Description:
From our personal collection, on offer is this superb bronze (or brass/copper alloy) Kpelie mask from the Senufo peoples of Mali. The Kpelie masks are danced during initiation, fertility, & other ritual ceremonies.
Skilled metal workers, this piece is a fine presentation of Senufo artistry in the realm of lost wax casting. A pair of horns adorn the forehead of the mask, in between which is a female guardian figure in a proud stance. "Leg" extensions protrude from the chin of the piece. Winged appendages radiate outwardly from the cheeks. Superb raised scarification patterns frame the face & accentuate the legs. Incised highlights ornament the exaggerated lips & horns, as well as the detailing around the eyes.
Despite a few minor imperfections, this classic mask is in very good overall condition. Beautifully detailed, plus well-developed patina with some oxidation present. A most striking display & a fine addition to any collection.
Please note: although this mask is suitable for wall display, a custom stand crafted especially for this piece is available, permitting table-top display. Please inquire.
