Description:
On offer from our personal collection is this powerful, old warrior mask from the Salampasu peoples of the DR Congo. Carved from wood, small sheets or strips of copper have been applied to the face of the mask. Giving the mask an aggressive appearance is the characteristic massive, bulging forehead, deep-set eyes, triangular nose, & open mouth bearing an intimidating set of filed teeth. A beard of braided grasses extends from the chin. Primarily used to protect the tribal villages, such masks are worn & danced in ritual settings by members of the warrior society.
Despite a few imperfections in the wood, including a chip to the right ear, & to the bottom of the rim visible only from the back, this fearsome mask is in good overall condition. Excellent patina. A most powerful display.
