Description:

Of all the highly distinctive masks associated with the African continent, those known as Bwoom from the Kuba peoples of the DR Congo will always hold a special fascination for us, & the superb mask on offer here from our personal collection is no exception. According to Kuba legend, Bwoom was the jealous brother of the king, Mwaash Mboy, & attempted to steal away the king's wife, Ngaady Mwaash.
Exaggerated features are a notable trademark of the masks representing Bwoom, such as the bulging brow & broad nose. This massive piece is generously embellished with metal, cowrie shells, beads, & fur. Thin metal sheeting has been applied to the surface of the brow, & also accentuates the nostrils, mouth, & under the eyes. The "tongue" is liberally ornamented with cowrie shells & beads. Multiple beaded patterns criss-cross the eyes & bridge of the broad nose, as well as the forehead. Additional beads highlight the eyelids & mouth & other areas of the mask. An edging of fur decorates the uppermost rim of the mask.

Despite some minor imperfections, including a few scuffs, a small piece of missing metal (from the brow), & an old age crack, the mask is in very good overall condition. All of its cowrie shells are in place, & nearly all of the beads are intact. This grand mask makes an imposing & powerful display.
