Description:
From our private collection, on offer is this superb Go Ge mask from the Dan peoples of Liberia. Worn only for funeral ceremonies of important chiefs, the Go Ge masks serve a highly specialized function in the rituals of the Dan.
Infused with spirit, the sensitive face is characterized by slit eyes, protruding lips, & a domed brow, highlighted by a raised, sensuously curved ridge. Tightly braided vegetal fibers are matted to the top & sides of the mask, & form the ringlets that frame the face. Attachment holes perforate the perimeter of the piece.
Overall condition: despite a few minor imperfections in the wood, including an old chip to the right brow & the bottom of the back rim, this fine mask is in very good overall condition. Well-worn, this evocative piece bears significant signs of age- & use-related wear. With its rich, deep luster patina, the mask displays beautifully. A very special piece...
