Description:
From our private collection, on offer is a haunting Go Ge mask from the Dan peoples of Liberia. Worn only for funeral ceremonies of important chiefs, the Go Ge masks serve a highly specialized function in the rituals of the Dan.
Much like the Dan racer masks, this face has round, open eyes, plus characteristic protruding lips. A raised, vertical ridge highlights the brow, while incised scarifications accentuate the cheeks. Braided rope is matted to the top & sides of the mask, & hugs the chin. Fibers wound into ringlets frame the face, & a frayed-fiber beard completes the jawline. Attachment holes perforate the perimeter of the piece.
Despite imperfections in the wood, including scuffs & scrapes, & a small old chip on the back rim, the mask is in good overall condition. With its compelling features & old patina, the mask displays beautifully.
