Description:
From our private collection, on offer is this compelling clay/terracotta mask from Latin or South America (possibly Columbia). To achieve its somewhat ruddy complexion, we believe ash would have been applied to the surface of the piece during the firing process. Incised scarifications accent the eyes & cheeks, & an impressed repetitive motif highlights the brow. A crest surmounted by a frog adorns the upper forehead. The mask's rather fearsome appearance is enhanced by its aggressively open mouth & protruding lower jaw. Strong nose with flared nostrils & hauntingly-shaped eyes. Relatively thin-walled construction. The piece appears to have artistic influences of Mayan culture.
This captivating mask is in good overall condition. With its powerful features, it makes a highly effective display, & a handsome addition to any ethnographic collection.
