Description:
From our private collection, on offer is this striking ceramic bowl from Brazil. When we discovered this eye-catching piece, we were immediately attracted to its strong motifs, & were informed by the gallery that the artist used clay that was actually a mixture of clay reinforced with a metal compound. Interestingly, if you gently tap on the side of the bowl, the sound produced has a somewhat metallic ring to it. Artist-signed by Divaldo-Para.
With apparent influences from ancient Native Latin & South American arts & cultures, multiple complex patterns have been finely incised into the surface of the bowl. We believe it may be the metal compound present in the clay mixture that encourages the oxidized appearance of the intricate etched designs. Two sculpted, figural handles with faces are attached to opposite sides of the bowl. The interior has been left unglazed by the artist.
Despite a few minor imperfections (some of which occurred during the firing process & all of which were in place at the time of acquisition), this superb piece is in very good overall condition, & makes a powerful centerpiece display in any setting. A fine addition to any multi-ethnic collection.
