Description:
On offer from our personal collection is this handsome old spirit spouse figure - or blolo bian - from the Baule peoples of the Ivory Coast. Kept in personal shrines, they are treasured possessions of their earth-bound "mates."
A large sculpture standing nearly 28", & carved from dense, heavy wood, the face features coffee bean-shaped eyes, & a mouth with protruding tongue. A raised, striated band across the upper brow accentuates the crown & multi-point, plaited coiffure. His twisted double beard suggests he may represent tribal royalty.
Despite some imperfections in the wood, including scuffs, scrapes & abrasions, a few minor chips (including an old chip to the left ear), & old dry age-cracks (stable), this stately statue is in good overall condition. Encrusted patina & age-related wear. A compelling display.
