Description:
On offer from our personal collection is this menacing mask from the Bangwa peoples of Cameroon. Used by the powerful Night Society in Bangwa culture & worn by executioners, such masks are intended to instill fear & terror, & are regarded as powerful fetish objects. Rarely viewed in public, they are held in a discreet location.
Boldly aggressive & threatening, the piece is characterized by highly exaggerated features -- bulbous jowls form the cheeks; buggy eyes appear to pop out of their sockets; protruding lips bare filed teeth; the oversized, beak-like nose is imposing; & a prominent, intimidating protrusion juts out from the brow.
Despite some imperfections in the wood, including abrasions & a few old chips (including one to the bottom rim on the right side, & to the left ear), this unnerving mask is in good overall condition. Well-worn surface & encrusted patina. Outstanding, eye-catching display.
