Description:
On offer from our personal collection is this captivating maternity figure from the Bamum/Bamun peoples of Cameroon. Carvers & metalcrafters from the Cameroon region are renowned for their skilled artistry & imaginative work, & their sculptures are highly prized.
A large sculpture (32") & classic in form, this proud mother embraces her child, & with open mouth, she sings outwardly. Judging by its well-established, heavily encrusted patina, the statue must have been an important figure in the tribal community, receiving countless libations, probably consisting of egg & other substances, enabling it to build-up a thick, all-over coating.
Despite some imperfections in the wood, this superb sculpture is in good overall condition. There are chips & scrapes, including minor chipping to the outer edges of the mother's feet; dry age cracks, including one on the torso that also involves the child's & mother's arms, & one between the mother's buttocks; there are patches where some of the encrustation has flaked off; & there is evidence of indigenous repair to the child's left leg. Extraordinary encrusted patina. Outstanding display.
